Most modern vehicles on today's roads contain two drive belts. The timing belt, and the serpentine belt. Both are key components to the functionality of your vehicle.

What Your Car's Drive Belts do for Your Engine

The two main belts are used to power your engine and charge your car battery. Both belts are made of durable rubber compounds, they are designed to last up to 100,000 miles or more before requiring replacement. This all depends too if your car is kept in a garage or parked outside.

The timing belt connects to your crankshaft and camshaft, and keeps your engine's valves opening in time with one another, allowing the right ratios of fuel and oxygen to combust under the spark plugs, which run your car engine until the ignition is turned off.

A serpentine belt runs on a system of pullies, and it connects to a rotor on your alternator motor. The movement of the serpentine belt creates voltage within the alternator which is delivered to charge the battery and run other components like your power windows and your windshield wipers.

Signs of a Failing Engine Belt

Since both of these belts are essential for performance, it is wise to inspect them when your car reaches 80,000+ miles. Visually inspect for tears or fraying and listen for any screeching noises after starting your car. If you begin to have a slow car start or your interior lights begin to flicker, your serpentine belt may be beginning to fail. Seek a professional inspection to diagnose your potential drive belt issues before they break. It will cost more to repair an seized engine than replace a belt.
